Old fishermen houses used to dominate the peninsula "Halbinsel Stralau" Berlin until industrialization transformed the landscape. The first industrial building back then was the carpet factory "M. Protzen & Sohn" that lately got turned into the location for the recent Cons space. These historical changes also lead to new art directions like Art Nouveau / Jugendstil, which harmonized different materials like wood, iron, and glass.
CONS Space Berlin celebrated skateboarding, music, and art. Besides skateboarding sessions, the space showcased some highlights like the Skateboard Concerto by Sébastien Carayol and Fortunato d'Orio; DIY Skateboarding with Lennie Burmeister; Lodown's "VÉHICULE" launch with Luca Lozano and even Redman was rocking the skate floor for the opening night.
The program was packed with movie nights, concerts, workshops, events, visits by the Converse Skate team and a Jason Jessee retrospective that accompanied the release of his Santa Cruz signature Chucks. Lodown sat down with Jason Jessee to hear about his thrilling car flip and how to get hugs from the highway patrol.
Kenny Anderson was also in the house and gave us some insights into his environmental activities and his stunning amazon tour.
Roberto Cuellar designed the entire skate lab for the creative platform CONS Space Berlin in order to celebrate skateboarding, music, and art. Roberto grew up in Mexico and moved to Germany at the age of twelve; in his works he loves to mix the flashy and playful Mexican culture with clear German aesthetics. Asked for the five qualities a man should own, he answered: "Dreams are very important; you also need fears to find your limitations and overcome them; love & passion as motivator; family & friends as support and a skateboard to explore. In the end you can break down life to the two basic motivating forces fear and love."
