MONDAY MIXTAPE

ANDY JENKINS: something old, something new, something rad

Do you remember these pre-Ableton and iTunes times, where you simply recorded your favorite songs onto tape? “Simply“ isn’t the right term though, as it took a fair amount of time to get these done, as you meticulously put the tracks in just the right order to either create the perfect soundtrack for the next road trip or the perfect tool to impress your future girlfriend. Adding the span it took to create a neat little cover to grace the whole thing and you knew that you better don’t make any other plans that particular evening.

Well, Mr. Andy Jenkins certainly remembers these times, as his entry for our Monday Mixtape series easily proves. His mix is a carefully selected collection of classic punk and new wave nuggets - with a few John Lurie instrumentals thrown in  at just the right time for you to catch your breath - which makes you immediately want to hit the road or grab your skateboard or simply try out some of that pogo routines you might have forgotten by now. Oh, and in the unlikely case you need some additional info: Andy Jenkins is one of those guys who had - and obviously still has - a significant impact on the pop cultural socialization of basically everyone I know, since he has been the art director and co-editor of Homeboy Magazine, the art director of Grand Royal Magazine, the art director of Dirt Magazine, and the bass player of legendary band Milk. Until this very day he’s part of the infamous Art Dump collective and the art- and creative director at Girl Skateboards. Yep, we don’t know either how compiling this mix actually fit into his ever busy schedule.
