Irina & Silviu
mixing genres
Irina and Silviu are two Romanian artists based in London specialized in traditional photomontage and collage, as well as in photography. They use diverse sources in their work, from 19th century photographs or scientific drawings spliced together with more obscure images, to the works of Dada (Duchamps, Foucault, Péret, Bataille, etc). Using only scissors and glue, these certainly are not your average collages simply aiming at shock value or cheap jokes.
“We chose collage because it gives us the possibility to remove an object from its original space allocated once and for all in a definitive reproduction (photography, printed images, etc.) and to place it in a whole different environment in order to produce alternative visual and conceptual behaviours with parallel functionalities.“
