Martin Kippenberger

at Kunstforum Wien

Martin Kippenberger was one of the most important and controversial artists of the 20th century, producing a body of work that pivots on dialogue and communication, including painting, drawing, object art, writing, photography, installation, performance, and collecting and curatorial activities.

This exhibition focuses on the central aspect of Kippenberger’s work: language. With language as the nucleus of his art, Kippenberger placed himself in the tradition of Dada and concrete poetry. His unique ability to sense contradictions in the zeitgeist operated primarily through words: picture titles, texts in pictures, puns and bad jokes, misunderstandings, slogans, rhymes, artists' books, etc. This exhibition is being produced in close cooperation with the Estate of Martin Kippenberger, Galerie Gisela Capitain/Cologne.
