Matt Henry

Short Stories

Short Stories, is the first monograph of Brighton-based photographer Matt Henry and re-imagines the turbulence of 60s and 70s America through the lens of small-town life. Comprising fictional scenes - often requiring intricate sets, large casts and crew - his work plays with fragments of American photography, cinema, and literature to explore underlying ideological concerns.

This book brings together eight years of work and includes previously unseen images. The photographs were captured between 2007 and 2015, most- ly as scenes staged in the UK, with Henry's first trip to shoot on American soil taking place in March 2015. The characters are a mix of professional actors, friends, and street casting, and Henry puts to use his own skills in prop and costume styling, story- boarding and set design. Henry is recognised for his use of light and colour and an implied narrative that challenges the viewer to address their own imagination in considering his works.
