The Taxi Project

“The intention of my photographs are to document the cultural and geographical use of space and place by people and communities” - Mike Harvey.

Being a taxi driver implies to run across all kind of persons. Mike Harvey is a traveller, to finance his travels he was riding people in his native city, Swansea in Wales. This allowed him to be an observer, and it became a real sociological experience. He noticed that everyone is the same with their fears and complexity.

It’s in 2010 that he decided to document some of his taxi travels with a Reflex; he was taking his passengers in picture only at the end of the ride with their approvals and it became “The taxi project”. He chose the black&white to emphasize and focus on the faces, the look is most of the time in the direction of the lens and candid. In the back seat of his car he met all kind of persons: mother, children, prostitute, couples, rich woman, lost guy, etc.

The funny thing is that he almost never met again all the people he took in picture. It’s like getting parts of life moments in a long dream.

He is currently in an exhibition in Swansea at the Monkey and some prints are available on his website:http://www.mikeharvey.co.uk/
