MONDAY MIXTAPE: barnaby bruce

joy & reverie

Dusk, a road, a long drive ahead.  Changing moods as night falls and the skyline becomes a silhouette.  Memories of a particular sunset on a sandy foreshore, and a strangely familiar boat resting on the beach edge, as the road unwinds before you…

Remember that? Last summer? No? Too long ago? Well, today's Monday Mixtape by Barnaby Bruce will help you out to bring that back to mind - even if you've never been to that beach, never have seen that boat...

Barnaby Bruce started out DJing and playing percussion in the London in the early 90’s, recording with Essa on Paper Recordings.  He then travelled the world to study Afro-latin percussion with numerous greats from New York to Cuba.

He’s recorded for the Bear Funk label in London, and with Max Essa (Is It Balearic?, Jansen Jardin) in Tokyo. Together with his brother Samuel Bruce (‘Mallorquin’), he launched the vinyl record label Palms & Charms in 2014, which has been supported by artists such as Moonboots and Coyote. Releases have included work by Masanori Ikeda and Max Essa.

His own record releases include This Time Around (critically acclaimed by Bill Brewster and on Apiento and Dr Rob’s Testpressing blog), and Staying Out, remixed by Sling & Samo on Swedish label Born Free Records.  In 2015 he joined forces with Drop Out Orchestra to produce the Gecko EP, and had his music licensed by Café Del Mar for their Balearic Grooves compilation series.  His most recent vinyl EP ‘Sweat On Velvet’ also featured a remix from Pete Herbert and has been supported by Faze Action and Mellophonia, amongst others.  2016 will see more releases from Palms & Charms.

Barnaby DJs regularly at numerous venues across Hong Kong - including MyHouse, Mitte and Woobar - and is also co-leader of Afro-Cuban jazz group Banda Orbita.

Now, take that walk to the beach. We're happy to have him being our guide!
