MONDAY MIXTAPE: DIN DAA DAA

Danse Relenti

You know how it works… some artist/ DJ you admire and follow on soundcloud reposts some mix of someone you’ve never heard of before. Then another one does the same and you’ll be like „Ok, I’ll give it a listen.“. That’s how I stumbled over Din Daa Daa maybe about two years ago and was an immediate fan of her. Her mixes bounce between laid back disco, tropical grooves, the electronic avant garde of the last century, ambient bliss and memories of last vacation’s sunburn on your skin. Apart from the fact that we like her mixes a lot, we don’t know much about Denise Ross, so we asked her to give us a little round-up:

I grew up in Glasgow where music is a big deal. I’ve lived in other cities over the years -- London, New York, Melbourne and Amsterdam – all places that have thriving music communities, but Glasgow has always remained my musical home. Inspired by the House music I heard at the Sub Club I started buying vinyl in the late 1980s and in 1992 got my first set of turntables (belt drive, anyone?). It wasn’t long before I got my first DJ gig at the Arches and things really took off from there.

I got a job at Bomba Records then moved to London to work at legendary distributor Greyhound Records where I ran a couple of deep house labels - Quiet Riot and Black Jesus. With the decline of the record industry I returned to Glasgow to work as a web designer but music remained my passion and I continued to DJ and throw parties. It is a pretty wild city - a quiet drink on a Friday night can easily end up at an after-party on Saturday morning, especially when there are so many amazing local DJs like David Barbarossa, Andrew Pirie, Pro Vinylist Karim and JD Twitch to tempt you.

When I was offered a job in Amsterdam last year I knew only two people – Janneke Hulshof and James Pole – friends of mine from our partying days in Glasgow who had recently made the move to Amsterdam. They introduced me to Redlight Records and my record collection has expanded exponentially ever since!

I like to think of Redlight as an antique shop for vinyl, filled with classics, rarities and obscurities, all hand picked and curated with love, care and wisdom. I’ve found not only great music but great friends too. Many a Heineken has been drank in the shop during impromptu listening sessions with Tako, Jamie Tiller, Siba Kladik, Troy Dean, Bobby Beige, Floor, James and Jan. Sweeter still, I met my boyfriend Abel there when he recommended the perfect records for me.

This mix is a selection of some of the wonderful discoveries I have made while here in Amsterdam, with Glasgow firmly in my heart.

Thanks Din Daa Daa for this Lodown exclusive, a perfect late summer breeze!
