MONDAY MIXTAPE: Rogér Rogér

Live at Beyond Festival

Rogér is widely known as a man that is very hard to pin down. He has been dominating the illegal circuit of the Dutch westcoast for many years now, playing raw, energetic, extended techno sets as the main resident of the notorious Bauhaus organisation fromAmsterdam. But he is also known as a man with much deeper interests.

“Whether it’s techno, electro, dub or disco, I’m in for everything. I hardly think about genres, as they can create boundaries very easily for us. And people can get very analabout categories. That’s the part I never really understood. My friends and I never discuss the music we’re playing. We only decide wether we like something or not.

People kind of know now what to expect, while they don’t really know what to expect. This eclectic and Balearic style of mixing is absolutely perfect for me. I get bored very easily, but now I can play some crazy funk or disco tracks at a 135 bpm and throw in a little bit of electro afterwards and people will take it. It’s a luxury, especially in a city like Amsterdam. There’s not a lot of acts around here that are able to pull that off without seeing their crowd walk away. There’s a really small but really steady following at themoment and they seem to trust me. Even when I play shit that is not right up their alley. They trust me on this one. I’m very happy in the place where I’m at now.”

Today’s mix is a recording he did at the sold out Beyond Festival in May 2015. The day had a really grey and rainy start, but the sun came out as he was about to start his set. We’re not sure if his set is a reaction on that or if the sun came out as our mother star did know what was going to happen next.

„Not sure yet what I was going to do, the promoter asked me to play safe and asked if I could play a typical house set. You really shouldn’t push me into corners, cause you will most definetly receive the exact opposite. I know how to get a party properly started, and I know exactly how to adjust my music to the ones playing before me and after me. So I started my set at a 135bpm with all kinds of italo/disco/electro. A full on planet rock set. Gradually slowing it down and pushing the musics to a more techno orientated corner for the DJ who was playing after. Combined with the sudden arrival of the sun, it was probably the best choice I could have made that day.“

One thing is for sure: even if you like that certain style of music or not - you can’t help but smile while listening.

Just do it. Now.
