SHADOWMAN
Richard Hambleton Retrospective
The late Richard Hambleton's artwork, in particular his so-called "shadowmen", were a staple-item of the early 80s New York street art movement. The large dark silhouettes he painted on walls in lower Manhattan back then led to him becoming known as the godfather of street art, with him being virtually the first to find recognition in the commercial art market, paving the way for the likes of Basquiat and Haring to do the same and inspiring later street artist, amongst them Banksy and Blek le Rat.
Hambleton's oeuvre will be displayed in the first major exhibition since his death in late 2017 at Leake Street Arches in London from September 13 – 15. The exhibition contains over 60 artworks and photos, including his most influential works, such as his early ‘Shadowman’ canvas paintings, a selection of his ‘Marlboro’ rodeo horse silhouettes and his series of land- and seascapes, called ‘Beautiful Paintings’ as well as previously unseen pieces as well as the iconic photographs of Hambleton’s murals across the streets of New York, captured by photographer Hank O’Neal.
A collection of limited edition prints can be viewed at Maddox Gallery from September 18.
