Three The Hard Way presents a visual history of Jamaican music and culture, channelled through three collections of work. Capturing the bold graphic identity of 1980s dancehall music, ‘In Fine Style’ is a cross section of vibrant illustrations by Jamaican artist Wilfred Limonious with a focus on his LP cover illustrations, now recognised as pioneering works of the genre. ‘Serious Things A Go Happen’ presents an insight into Jamaican producer and director Maxine Walters’ 4,000-strong collection of hand-painted posters, used to advertise local dances. In London-based photographer Alex Bartsch’s ‘Covers’ series, Jamaican musical history is brought into the present, with reggae album covers held up against the London locations in which they were originally photographed. By uniting these moments in Jamaica’s cultural legacy, Three The Hard Way celebrates a movement that continues to provide inspiration and influence today.
