God Sound You
Release at Spectrum Milano
God Sound You is a book by Federico Radaelli, edited and curated by SPECTRUM, collecting the photographer’s archive on the Japanese Bōsōzoku scene shot between 2018 and 2023.
The quasi-300 pages book is curated by SPECTRUM, with art direction by Daniel Sansavini, a full-color offset, printed in JB5 Japanese paper format, with a gold foil print velvet hardcover. First edition of 200.
As a Tokyo-based self-taught photographer led by a penchant for auto and moto tuning and subcultures’ aesthetics, Federico managed to portray an angle of a very complex phenomenon in Japan - once associated with youth gangs and today mainly a re-enactment of a glorious past by former Bōsōzoku gang members and new generation’s enthusiasts - codifying through his viewpoint a powerful and flashy visual language depicted by provocative use of symbols and logos from various contexts.
Bōsōzoku is a strictly Japanese youth subculture. Composed mainly of high school students animated by a rebellious spirit, the Bōsōzoku gangs have become part of the Japanese collective imagination, particularly during the late Showa period (early 1980s until mid-90s). Their vehicle customisations are strictly linked to a rough DIY ethic and a strong gathering drive. Today the phenomenon survives mainly as an evocative aestheticized form, a memory of the original countercultural outlaw spirit.
To celebrate the book launch, SPECTRUM presents a dedicated capsule collection in collaboration with Carhartt WIP featuring photos and graphics from the book. The capsule consists of a t-shirt with digital and screen print, a long sleeve with digital and screen print, and a hoodie with embroidered lettering and screen print.
The book, along with the capsule by Carhartt WIP, will be presented at SPECTRUM, via De Amicis 23, Milano, on May 31, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM, featuring in-store aperitivo and book signing W/Federico Radaelli. God Sound You book + capsule collection is available starting June 1st exclusively at SPECTRUM Milano locations and online.
