SAMPLE STITCH

The (mad) data scientist Matt Daniels, known for his studies on hip-hop vocabulary, just created a MPC website keyboard (Music Production Center) for you to go crazy on your laptop- simply because that “more people understood this process and gift” of sample-based music.

Indeed, the keyboard “Sample Stitch” shows how difficult and, well, weird it is to compose a song like this. Producers and musicians are actually working for hours to find “the” moment with the exact note at the exact millisecond for an interesting beat. However, Matt Daniels already provides samples elaborated with the choice of three beats taken by Kanye West, Jay Dilla and 9th Wonder.

“Sample Stitch“ allows you to replay, sample and reconstruct instrumentals from beforementioned artists. As an example: “Otis” from Kanye - which sings along “Try a Little Tenderness” from Otis Redding, the Q and W keys deliver extracts from the guitar, while the piano are the keys H, J and K, and the B, N and M keys feature the famous “gotta – gotta – na na na !”.

It might sound complicated to operate at first, and it actually is, but like with most things all it needs is practice. Enjoy.
