New Era X Spike Lee

1996 COLLECTION

New Era teams up with the New York filmmaker and trend starter, Spike Lee as a part of the on-going New Era Heritage Series.

Back in 1996, Spike Lee needed a hat that matches his new jacket, so he took the phone and called New Era’s CEO, Chris Koch to ask him if he could have a scarlet red Yankees cap. Few seconds later, Koch was producing new Yankees caps in colours other than the traditional dark navy, including green, yellow, and orange.

Spike Lee then wore the cap on game three of the 1996 World Series in Atlanta exposing the cap to millions. Obviously, people didn’t ignore it – New Era needed to produce more caps to meet the demand. This specific moment marked a turning point for the brand as they entered the fashion market in new colors.

And now on July 17th 2014, New Era finally decided to celebrate this unusual request by launching  the “1996” collection which include four caps in the traditional team navy colour and Lee’s scarlet red.

Look for the 1996 collection at select European retailers such as Overkill, Selfridges, Colette, size?, Corso Como, Caliroots or in any New Era store.
