The Popular Workshop is proud to present the Australian artist Jonathan Zawada’s latest solo show PWND.

PWND explores the confused, contradictory and combative language in the discourse surrounding privacy, transparency and freedom in virtual environments. Archival inkjet prints, sculpture, video, and interactive works draw upon the visual language of skinning, camouflage and obfuscation to connect the visceral humanist effects that ripple outward from the mixture of masculine teenage angst, puritanical rationalism and militaristic purpose that underpin many of our contemporary digital structures.

PWND is Jonathan Zawada’s (b.1981, Australia) first solo show in San Francisco. His work has been exhibited numerous times with Prism (Los Angeles), as well as solo shows at Collette (Paris), Vallery (Barcelona) and Monster Children (Sydney). Additionally, Zawada has worked as a commercial artist with companies such as Bloomberg, Nike, BMW, Herman Miller, Asos and Warp Records. Zawada’s practice is informed by his early roots in web design, coding and animation and his further evolution into commercial graphic design, illustration and art direction and now includes object design, sculpture, video, installation and painting. Zawada has been published several times, recently appearing in the book Pretty Ugly (Gestalten), Gas Book Pop (Gas), and Can The Drummer Give Some Back (Sixpack France).
