Bust a move

Taku Obata is a Japanese artist who grew up on a strictly diet of hip-hop, formed the dance crew Unity Selections and even refined his style of breakdancing through live performances.

One of his latest projects is titled “Bust a Move” - life-size wooden sculptures of very colourful futuristic break-dancers that pay homage to our beloved hip-hop culture.

The dancers clad in neon sweat suits assume exaggerated stances that evoke the athleticism and freedom of expression break dancing celebrates. For these works, Obata uses traditional Japanese carving techniques, invoking his heritage through the way he approaches his contemporary subject matter.

I am not simply creating a b-boy, but I aim to create an atmosphere, a cool space with a certain strange and interesting tension.”
