Toro Y Moi

empty nesters

Times seem to have been busier than ever for Chaz Bundick lately: he’s loaned his vocals to the last Chromeo album, finally started his own label and got that nasty club bone out of his system with his dancefloor outfit Les Sins. Somehow he still found the time to work on new material under his celebrated Toro Y Moi moniker as well - with a little help from Unknown Mortal Orchestra guitarist Ruban Neilson and fellow multi-instrumentalist Julian Lynch - resulting in his fourth album “What For“, which surprisingly (well, is it really?) is his strongest album to date.

The whole thing still has this weird kinda retro-futuristic sound in places, and still flirts with R&B, spaced-out funk and bedroom soul. The new thing though, is that this time around Bundick adds an overdose of pop to his amalgamation, and it turned out to be a perfect fit. Take the first single “Empty Nesters“ as an example, a pitch-perfect piece of heavily positive contemporary bubblegum pop that makes you immediately freak out in your room as if you’re a goddamn airdancer. If you’re looking for an album these days that feels strangely coherent and heavily diverse at the same time, then don’t look any further than the latest offering from this prolific musical explorer. “What For?“ will be out in early April via Carpark.
