Sam Durant often investigates social, historical and political issues through sculpture, installation, photography and drawing. He incorporates text and language that is imbued with these histories to find how the meaning is constructed and understood in society. The large scale exterior signs are commercially produced outdoor illuminated display units. They are the types found on the sides of small, local businesses such as convenience stores, restaurants, liquor stores and auto repair shops. The slogans derive from hand made signs from protest marches and demonstrations. For this Case Studyo edition 3 new slogans have been rendered in a smaller and more affordable size.
