kimono

exhibition at Bröhan-Museum

The Kimono, literally “a thing to wear”, is celebrated through an exhibition in Berlin at the Bröhan-Museum until the 6th of September - a perfect opportunity to discover and understand the history of the traditional and overall beautiful Japanese garment.

The exhibition has collected a large variety of Kimonos; they differ by colour, material, form, period and region of origin. The Museum also called for artists, mother and daughter Fukumi and Yoko Shimura, to create specific kimonos. Fukumi started her carrier when she was 30 years old. She began weaving with pongee yarn dyed with plant dye. Having developed the same interest as her mother, Yoko followed her example. In 1989, she established her own workshop, the Tsuki Atelier. The work of the two artists has been highly praised in Japan and abroad.
