MONDAY MIXTAPE: COMA

comasmondaymorningmix

If you’re having a soft spot for pop-infused techno, there’s absolutely no way you could have missed Coma. The Cologne duo, around since 2007, made heavy impact with their live shows in their hometown, finding their own way to break down the barriers between club culture and live concerts. They famously hit the ground running, winning over the audience almost immediately with catchy electronics including laptops, guitars, synthesizers and microphones. Hailed as Cologne's next big thing from the get-go, and still steadily gaining momentum, Coma's journey isn't necessarily easy - as both producers are more ardent perfectionists than hyped-up egomaniacs. Thus, their first official release took another year before it was finally revealed to a wound-up public in 2008 on Firm.

Soon after they found home to german Techno mothership Kompakt who, after a handful of expertly crafted EPs and three years of meticulous preparation, released their LP „In Technicolor“ in 2013. The name already hints at the newly found playfulness on display, or as Coma put it themselves: "Where our previous releases were kinda mirroring a foggy black and white movie, this is definitely a color film... our attempt at fusing diverse sounds in a more vivid manner, without falling prey to boring club conventions restricting the expressiveness of the music." When listening to „In Technicolor“ - definetly one of last year’s best dancefloor albums - I couldn’t decide whether Marius Bubat and Georg Conrad were sitting in their studio in absolute glee of having found the perfect melodies - or if that might be some kind of super clever irony, some genious tongue in cheek twist and they were laughing their asses off for giving techno the perfect friendly side blow that really is needed for a genre that often takes itself too serious. However, Coma’s music is giving back the scene what’s essential for dancefloors and any good party: smiling faces.

That’s also what this monday mixtape evokes. If you happen to be in Hamburg for the Reeperbahn Festival in october, be sure to catch one of their fabulous live shows on the 17th and 18th or their B2B DJ-set on the 19th. For all others check their updates on shows around the globe and releases via their facebook page and listen to more stuff on their soundcloud outpost. And in the meantime, you should go and get Coma’s latest release on Kompakt, Atlantis.
