MONDAY MIXTAPE: David Barbarossa

PUPPY DANCE HAPPINESS POSSIBILITY (Tribute to House Of Honey Vol.1)

Some of you might think we’re getting money from the city of Glasgow for putting their musical scene into the right light... Sorry to tell you, yes, we wouldn’t have anything against receiving a cheque, but it’s just not the case. Glasgow just has a healthy, vibrant and diverse scene, so here’s another one hailing from the north of the British Island, David Barbarossa, who’s supplying us two hours of superb company for this (at least in Berlin) sunny monday.

Some words from David:

Around 6 years ago my good friend Denise began having little get togethers in her flat, never more than  a couple of dozen people. The premise was pretty simple: great friends, great records and a great sound system.

We were lucky enough to have Andrew Pirie (who does Melting Pot in Glasgow and helps set up the system at the Loft/Lucky Cloud parties) in charge of the sound and some of my favourite DJs in charge of the music. I made some of my best friends at those parties. It was an anything goes sort of affair, in terms of music and general outlook. Disco divas rubbed shoulders with Techno baldies, Rock N Rollers met Jazzers. The records played were a similarly mixed bag, and the attitude has done more to inform my DJ 'style' - if you can call it that - than most other clubs put together. This mix is an approximation of the sort of things that I would play if the party was still happening now, unfortunately due to the attendees now being spread around the world - alongside the cost of upkeep on mirrorball catsuits - it's not an ongoing concern. But it was a moment in time, and maybe it's better that it only lasted for a short period before things got a chance to get tired. So, as I say, this is the sort of things I would play there. Some old favourites and some new discoveries, songs about love, songs about partying, songs about other stuff, songs to dance to, songs to scheme and plan to, songs to smoke on the balcony to, songs to strip down to your underwear to. Some bargain bin bangers and some slightly more elusive jams. A selection of records put together - though not really 'mixed' as such - with friends in mind, and probably best listened to in the company of some of your favourite people.

To get myself in the mood I slipped in to my gold hotpants and drank a little potion. I didn't use a rotary and there are some crackles on a fair few of the records, I hope Andrew won't be too horrified.

As I said, House of Honey has done more than its fair share to inform the way I DJ but I also have to mention Charlie McCann, Calypso Steve, Fergus & The Puggy Boiz, DJ Pep Talk (AKA House Of Traps), Andi Hanley, Optimo, Harri & Domenic, everyone at Outlaws, Turbo Island, Teamy and PVK who have all done their bit to keep me creative too.

Lots of Love to KB, who has done her best not to kill me despite me leaving records all over the place at all times.
