Westermann

at HVW8 BERLIN

HVW8 Berlin is pleased to present the first solo show by Andrew Westermann, titled, "Whatever I am to you, that's fine." In this mixed-media exhibition of paintings and drawings, the Cologne-based artist envisions the entire gallery space as a canvas for his explorative representations of the skull. Westermann reduces this classic symbol of human mortality to reflexive mantras. This contemporary ode to vanitas embodies the artist's obsession with the tension between life and death, which he utilizes as his primary inspirations to create.

By extending this symbolic-charged imagery onto the surface of found domestic objects and furniture, Westermann constructs 'Whatever I am to you, that's fine' as a microcosm of his iconic style and ethos. Integrating his revised memento mori into a casual, home-like setting, Westermann updates the spatial and temporal bearings of the classical symbol, reconsidering the prevalence of what it means to only live once.
