Monday Mixtape: HAUNTED

"just vibing"

The first time I got in contact with Phil Jones vision of sound was through Dog Bite’s deep, hazy, woozy, psych-laced harmonies, that touched and thrilled me. A couple years later It’s my pleasure to introduce his Monday Mixtape!

Haunted aka Phil Jones seems to feel home in a variety of creative fields. He started trading songs with Ernest Greene in the summer of 2009, released the single Machino Machino with Dog Bite in 2010 and joined Washed Out's live band as a keyboarder and percussionist in 2011. A couple collaborations like Veux for example (with Matthewdavid /Leaving Records) followed and with the re-incarnations in form of Haunted and being half of the futuristic R&B act The Pheels (with Curtis Fields) - the future looks very promising.. For now, drift into his exclusive Mix “Just Vibing” and the following interview.

> How did you select the tracks for the mix? Did you have a certain concept to begin with or did it evolve organically?
I usually try make mixes as organic as possible, this collection of tracks is music I've been vibing to lately.

> When did you start making music? Was there a key moment / memory, that go you hooked?
I started making music for fun when I was 17 after a friend (who I skated with) asked me to do vocals for a band he was starting.
I definitely decided music was something I could do when I got flown out to London for the first time to play a few shows and record some songs when I was like 19 or 20. I remember thinking "oh this is totally manageable."

> To which records / artists did you grow up to?
I grew up listening to a lot of Caribou, Animal Collective, Mos Def, Portishead, J Dilla, and the Roots. I definitely listened to “Donuts” everyday for like 2 years.
My parents listened to a lot of jazz, calypso, and reggae. I had a pretty well rounded music upbringing, but I didn't care to much about music until I was in High School.

> How’s your creative process when you produce music?
I usually like to start from scratch, and then mold it to whatever vibe I'm feeling at the moment. I try to let the music guide where the song goes.

> What comes first a sound /sample or a certain feeling you’d like to transmit?
Definitely a feeling. The feeling really dictates how the song will interact with the listener.

> What get’s you hyped?
Skate videos, burritos, art, travel, jai paul's music and the future

> If you had to describe Atlanta and references a couple songs, which ones would that be?
Really anything Outkast

> What influenced your take on R&B for the Pheels?
I just wanted to make something that people didn't know/think I could do. And then when Curtis and I started working together it just felt right, the vibes and ideas were all there. It all happened pretty organically.

> If you could have supernatural powers which one would you pick and why?
Probably telekinesis, just cus I'm lazy and would rather move things with my mind than my hands.

> What is up next?
Basically all my projects have releases that will be ready soon. Dog Bite has a new EP in the works, Haunted has a new EP that's pretty much done and will be released soon called "So Heat", and The Pheels is finishing our debut EP called "likeWise". There's also a bunch of collabs that will be coming out sooner or later that I'm pretty psyched about. This year will be busy!
